Jonathan Gitlin, there are lots of ways to get to 2.5 or 1.5 meter accuracy with GPS augmentation. "Assisted" GPS units will use some other means (wifi triangulation is the first choice on a smartphone) to determine an approximate location, so missing some of the radio signal doesn't cause any problems. Minor positional data (metres) is repeated more often than major positional data (which state are you in?), which is why it can take minutes or even hours to determine your location but once it has a fix it will track you in real time. This isn't really a problem if you're stationary, but it can be if you're moving and the signal is unreliable for a few seconds. There's a lot of redundancy and error correction codes in the protocol, so if some of the radio signal isn't picked up then your device can simply wait for it to be repeated. Anything that can be large will be.Īnything smaller adds significant noise to the signal, which causes delays determining your location but shouldn't have any significant affect on accuracy. That said, I'm not a GPS expert, I'm and MET who sometimes sells systems and is working off what the really smart guys told him.Īn antenna of that size is necessary to reliably pick up the radio wavelength used by GPS satellites.
This unit is close to 12" in dia and, from what I've been told, that's not because ag stuff has to be large but rather the physical size of the antenna is important to accuracy etc.
